This fall, the big guns really are coming out to play. Regardless of your console preference, you’ll be happy to know that some of the most ambitious games launch as the leaves turn and fall. Amongst a plethora of system-exclusives like Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, and Gears of War 2, Ubisoft’s Far Cry 2 will simultaneously launch on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Although a precise date has not been ironed out, Ubisoft clearly wants to go toe to toe with the biggest games of the fall. Ubi recently confirmed a fall 2008 release and will soon let loose a media storm of previews, exclusives, etc.

Far Cry 2 been in development limbo for what seems like an eternity. Firstly, it should be clarified that developer Crytek is not working on Far Cry’s successor, but rather the crack team at Ubisoft Montreal, whose fabulous work includes Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed. Far Cry 2 looks to be in good hands, and promises to live up to the lofty expectations of its predecessor. Taking place in the sweltering African veldt, Ubisoft’s newest will allow gamers to tackle missions their own way. Vehicles, guns, and stealth will no doubt be key, but Ubi is pushing the bounds of graphics and intensity. Fire will spread and consume the dry grass and dynamic weather systems will be both dazzling and crucial to successful planning. We are just itching to get our paws on any version of this remarkable shooter. Don’t worry about Ubi cutting corners like the did with previous Far Cry entries; this time, all versions are nearly identical.

PSP to be Sonys Handheld of choice for the next 7 years?

Whether it be on the original model, or the newer slim PSPs, millions of people have been enjoying Sony’s handheld for over three years now. Recently IGN interviewed Senior Marketing Manager for the PSP, John Koller about the PSP’s three year anniversary. When asked what he thought the life cycle of the PSP would be Koller said:

“We’ve talked about the PSP being a 10 year product, but a 10 year product in the continued… how can I put this… in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn’t going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years, but it will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features.”

To simplify what he said, basically the PSP will be around for at least the next seven years. But, it will see different versions released with tweaks, much like the transition from the original model to the PSP Slim. Honestly this shouldn’t be a big surprise, Sony has done the same thing with the PS1 and is currently approaching nine years with the PS2. And no doubt we’ll be seeing a PS3 Slim somewhere down the line as well.

It also seems that Sony is planning more additional features for the PSP, other then what we have already seen. How many of those will make it out of Japan and out to other areas remains to be seen. Personally, I just want Sony to hurry up and get the GPS stuff to the states pronto. If I’m lucky, maybe it will be here by the PSP’s tenth birthday.

Why G4 isnt About games anymore

The first show I ever watched on G4 was Filter. I admit, I enjoyed it, as any top ten countdown involving games and a remotely attractive Asian woman is going to be enjoyable, but I also wondered how long could it go on for and still be watchable. I mean there were only so many countdowns the show could run through and still be interesting. This problem was kind of emblematic of the entire station though. Not enough content to keep on maintaining interest from the general public. Ratings plummeted and the station reformatted itself.

Now the station is on a 35 month role of increased ratings, according to G4’s President, Neal Tiles on G4’s Open Source page. This is because, he says, they aren’t solely focusing on games anymore, despite the eyer of many of the stations fans. In fact most of the gaming programming has been removed from G4 to allow for shows like Star Trek and Cops because it brings in bigger ratings. Tiles says that this does not mean that gaming will be removed completely from G4 and that the station is not becoming another Spike. After explaining that he wants G4 to be the television station for the “Xbox/YouTube/iPod generation,” Tiles then hit everyone who still had hopes of a station completely devoted to gaming with the hard hand of reality.
