BBFC gives green light to GTIV

The UK’s ratings board has approved Rockstar North’s Grand Theft Auto IV for release without any cuts. The board came to its decision after playing through 5 hours of the game and viewing 8 hours of cut scene content.
This is all in the light of the long winded court battle between Rockstar and the BBFC over the release of its controversial slasher Manhunt 2, and after a narrow and bitter victory it was hoped that the BBFC wouldn’t take a stand over the release of GTA IV.
The announcement also comes in the wake of the Byron Report which saw the way games are rated and heavily scrutinized.
The announcement will no doubt be a huge relief for both Sony and Microsoft who are relying on the game’s success to sell hardware, with Microsoft investing large amounts of money in downloadable content to make their version of the game more attractive. The game is also an important part of the portfolio of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two who has found itself in muddy water recently with a takeover bid from EA looming large.
The BBFC’s report describes in colorful detail the ins and outs of the questionable content in GTA IV, making references to the sexual and violent elements of the gameplay that the series has become famous (or notorious) for. According to the report, “During gameplay the character can pick up prostitutes,” however, at the request of Rockstar, exactly what happens next has been mysteriously withheld. So we’ll just have to use our imaginations until the 29th.
The GTA franchise has sold 66 million units to date and GTA IV is expected to shift 6 million in the first week of release.
Far Cry 2 coming this Autumn

This fall, the big guns really are coming out to play. Regardless of your console preference, you’ll be happy to know that some of the most ambitious games launch as the leaves turn and fall. Amongst a plethora of system-exclusives like Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, and Gears of War 2, Ubisoft’s Far Cry 2 will simultaneously launch on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Although a precise date has not been ironed out, Ubisoft clearly wants to go toe to toe with the biggest games of the fall. Ubi recently confirmed a fall 2008 release and will soon let loose a media storm of previews, exclusives, etc.
Far Cry 2 been in development limbo for what seems like an eternity. Firstly, it should be clarified that developer Crytek is not working on Far Cry’s successor, but rather the crack team at Ubisoft Montreal, whose fabulous work includes Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed. Far Cry 2 looks to be in good hands, and promises to live up to the lofty expectations of its predecessor. Taking place in the sweltering African veldt, Ubisoft’s newest will allow gamers to tackle missions their own way. Vehicles, guns, and stealth will no doubt be key, but Ubi is pushing the bounds of graphics and intensity. Fire will spread and consume the dry grass and dynamic weather systems will be both dazzling and crucial to successful planning. We are just itching to get our paws on any version of this remarkable shooter. Don’t worry about Ubi cutting corners like the did with previous Far Cry entries; this time, all versions are nearly identical.
PSP to be Sonys Handheld of choice for the next 7 years?
This Article was written by
Matthew Ballard
Whether it be on the original model, or the newer slim PSPs, millions of people have been enjoying Sony’s handheld for over three years now. Recently IGN interviewed Senior Marketing Manager for the PSP, John Koller about the PSP’s three year anniversary. When asked what he thought the life cycle of the PSP would be Koller said:
“We’ve talked about the PSP being a 10 year product, but a 10 year product in the continued… how can I put this… in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn’t going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years, but it will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features.”
To simplify what he said, basically the PSP will be around for at least the next seven years. But, it will see different versions released with tweaks, much like the transition from the original model to the PSP Slim. Honestly this shouldn’t be a big surprise, Sony has done the same thing with the PS1 and is currently approaching nine years with the PS2. And no doubt we’ll be seeing a PS3 Slim somewhere down the line as well.
It also seems that Sony is planning more additional features for the PSP, other then what we have already seen. How many of those will make it out of Japan and out to other areas remains to be seen. Personally, I just want Sony to hurry up and get the GPS stuff to the states pronto. If I’m lucky, maybe it will be here by the PSP’s tenth birthday.
Why G4 isnt About games anymore

Matther Razak
The first show I ever watched on G4 was Filter. I admit, I enjoyed it, as any top ten countdown involving games and a remotely attractive Asian woman is going to be enjoyable, but I also wondered how long could it go on for and still be watchable. I mean there were only so many countdowns the show could run through and still be interesting. This problem was kind of emblematic of the entire station though. Not enough content to keep on maintaining interest from the general public. Ratings plummeted and the station reformatted itself.
Now the station is on a 35 month role of increased ratings, according to G4’s President, Neal Tiles on G4’s Open Source page. This is because, he says, they aren’t solely focusing on games anymore, despite the eyer of many of the stations fans. In fact most of the gaming programming has been removed from G4 to allow for shows like Star Trek and Cops because it brings in bigger ratings. Tiles says that this does not mean that gaming will be removed completely from G4 and that the station is not becoming another Spike. After explaining that he wants G4 to be the television station for the “Xbox/YouTube/iPod generation,” Tiles then hit everyone who still had hopes of a station completely devoted to gaming with the hard hand of reality.
Microsoft Crackin down on Gamerscore Cheaters
| The steps today takes the form of the following:• Resetting the entire Gamerscore for an account to zero • The account will be unable to regain all previously obtained achievements and Gamerscore, however, the players will have the ability to gain future Achievements by earning them fairly, like the majority of the Xbox LIVE community does. • The account will be clearly labeled as a cheater for the community to view on xbox.com. You can see an example here. In dash, the personal view of the gamercard will be labeled as well. |
Take that cheaters!

Unreal Engine 3, LineageIII?City of Heroes 2?
This Article was written by
Chris King
Epic Games can add another licensee to their rapidly growing list. NCsoft has announced that it has licensed the popular Unreal Engine 3 to develop two yet unnamed “top tier” MMOs. NCsoft has used Unreal Engine 2 in the past to develop Lineage 2, known for its beautiful graphics even by today’s MMO standards, and its soon to be released game Exteel.
Could this mean that NCsoft is going to make the natural progression of developing Lineage III on the Unreal Engine 3? There was a report nearly a year ago of thieves stealing some of Lineage III’s source code, so the game was in development for probably at least a year and a half at minimum. Other sources point to the project having officially begun Jan. 1, 2008, so the original project may have been scrapped to start over. Stranger things have certainly happened before. After all, Lineage III will need something to put it over the top and set itself apart. There was also a previous report from an unnamed NCsoft representative stating that Lineage III would be developed on a proprietary engine rather than the Unreal Engine 3; however, that is old news, and the licensing of the Unreal Engine 3 is new news, so anything is definitely possible at this point.
Or perhaps, now that NCsoft owns the rights to the City of Heroes franchise they are going to reinvent it with a sequel using the newly licensed engine? NCsoft Europe CEO Geoff Heath has recently gone on record saying the company has plans to launch new titles in the Company of Heroes franchise “in the next couple of years.” Just starting out with this new engine would certainly fit right into the beginning of such a development cycle.
Maybe we will see both titles come to light or NCsoft may just have plans for a new franchise altogether with their newly acquired engine. After all, they have made their interest in moving to consoles with their MMO’s quite clear. Heath added in his recent interview, “We’re going to be showing some stuff on PS3 later this year….We’re not quite ready to say what it is yet.”
My money is still on Lineage III and/or City of Heroes 2.

Halo Wars, The Best Console RTS Ever?
This Article was written by
Dan Haspert-
The RTS genre is almost as old as computers themselves, and has been equally successful. It wasn’t until recently though they started showing up on consoles with games like Battle for Middle Earth 2 and C&C3 paving the way for other games by proving that, while not the most ideal, the console controller can be a substitute for the mouse and keyboard.
In a recent interview with CVG, Ensemble Studios shared why reinventing the wheel might make Halo Wars the best console RTS ever. While all console RTS games to date have been ports of their PC brethren, Halo Wars is being built from the ground up for consoles, but what might come as a shock is that it was not built for Halo Wars. In fact Ensemble approached Microsoft with the intent to license out their newly developed RTS tech. After seeing what Ensemble had brought to the table, Microsoft felt it was time to approach its Halo franchise from a new angle, thus Halo Wars was born.
Ensemble is known for developing some of the greatest PC RTS games of all time. But to do Halo Wars right, they could not just follow the same tried and true forumla of RTS development. Instead, they approached Halo Wars more like how Bungie approached the other games in the Halo franchise. Instead of tedious recourse management, they focused on time and unit management, for instance if you need more troops you’ll need to hold the line till a supply run can get them to you. Thus just like in the other Halo games, knowing when to fight and when to take cover is the not only the difference between life and death but between winning or losing an entire battle. Ensemble feels it’s more about managing the battle rather than watching it.
To have this kind of management on the battlefield, players will be utilizing Ensembles new control system where selecting all of the units on-screen is as easy as double tapping, or you can paint over the troops you would like to select in a way that must have been inspired by MS Paint. CVG had some hands-on time with the game, and went as far as to call the controls “a million miles away from the nightmarish controls seen on ports of excellent PC titles such as Command & Conquer 3 and Lord of the Rings.”
I have not bought into RTS games on consoles yet, I want to, don’t get me wrong, but while the controls are passable, many people still beg for a trusty mouse and keyboard. Halo Wars may just be my “gateway drug” and bring the console RTS genre into a new age, a golden age, when players say “no thanks” to a mouse and keyboard “my controller is better.”
